100 days to 100% – Day 30 – list 10 things that make you happy

18 Jun

Woo hoo! We are 30 days into our challenge of 100 days to 100%! By now, your efforts should be developing into good everyday habits. They say that doing something for 30 days in a row will develop into a habit. I’m not so sure that is enough time. I think at 30 days it is still quite easy to walk away and stop what you are doing. That is why we are doing 100 days!! It will definitely be a good habit by then.

I wanted to talk about what it really means to have ‘self-care’. Yes, it is often about exercise and diet, which are quite important in the self-care realm. But it is so much more than that. It is about taking time for yourself too. Doing things that make you happy. Allowing yourself to rest and relax when you need to.  Spending time on gratitude every day.  Taking time to play and have fun. Treating yourself well.  Appreciating who you  are and the journey you are on.

Most of us know what makes us happy (we don’t always do it, but we know what it is). That thing that always brings a smile to your face. Whatever that is (and you really should have a long list of these things) you should do as often as possible.

But what if you don’t really know what makes you happy? What if it has been a really long time since you felt that way? I suggest going back in your memories and finding something that made you happy. Think about what you loved to do when you were 8 yrs old, 15 yrs old, 22 yrs old, etc. Find something in your past that you can try out again. Chances are good that if you loved swimming when you were in school, then you will still love swimming. That being said, sometimes the things we love to do change. And that is OK. Don’t keep doing something that you used to love if it really doesn’t bring you joy any longer. This is where paying attention to your own self really pays off.

Here is a list of 10 things that make me happy – in no particular order. Perhaps you can get some ideas from my list. 🙂

  1. reading books
  2. bubble baths
  3. watching the birds at the bird feeder
  4. seeing live theater
  5. game night with my family
  6. taking walks
  7. painting
  8. browsing at the bookstore
  9. morning cup of coffee
  10. hanging out at the beach (I don’t get to do this very often, but it is sure worth it when I do)

I recommend you make your own list. Start with 10, but keep adding to it as you notice those things that make you smile. And slowly start making those things part of your everyday routine. We want to develop good habits around happiness and joy too!

I’m feeling better already, just talking about the things that make me smile. How about you?
