Yoga For Your Brain™:   A Zentangle® Workout  by Sandy Steen Bartholomew

If you’re looking for a great Zentangle® book, check out Yoga For Your Brain™:   A Zentangle® Workout by Sandy Steen Bartholomew.  This 51 page book is jam packed with how-to’s, exercises and ideas that are delivered in a deliciously clear, easy to understand format.

Beginning with a short refresher on the Zentangle® basics, Sandy quickly moves into the beauty of shading.  Like many people, I was intimidated by shading.  Now I see how simple it is and I can refer to many shading options that make my Zentangles® much more interesting.

Sandy then jumps into dozens of designs with names like “Slink,” “Gewgle” and “Y.A.F (Yet Another Flower)” and shows us how to build each one using a red line to identify each new stroke.  There are more than 60 designs to try and I’ve managed to complete most of them.

One of the great things about this book is the interesting exercises that will make you see Zentangles® in a whole new way.  From observing patterns in the world around you to creative ways to combine of two (or more) designs, you’ll definitely get your Tangle juices flowing by doing these exercises.  I particularly liked the grid challenge on page 32 where you do a simple tangle across the top of the grid and along the right side of the grid, then make new combinations of using the one of the Tangles on the top and one of the Tangles along the side.

As a business and personal coach, I use mind mapping a lot to help clients focus on something specific that needs attention.  Sandy shows how you can use “Braintangling” like mind mapping, to achieve results that are not only practical, they are fun to do and fun to look at.

Finally, Sandy has a section that introduces you to transfers, printmaking and journaling your designs.  The possibilities are endless.
