Book Club – The Artist’s Way – Chapter 9

10 Aug

We are continuing on with our reading of The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron. This week was Chapter 9 – Recovering a Sense of Compassion.  This is all about compassion for ourselves and for our creative self and allowing ourself to play and have fun along the way.

There was a lot of talk about Fear again. Fear of labels and fear of comparison and fear of failure and fear of success and fear of what others think and on and on and on.  Many of these fears show up in our lives on a regular basis. And not just in our creative lives, but in other parts of our lives as well.  They create stress and worry and even more fears.  We need to pay attention and notice what fears we have so we can deal with them. Face them and minimize them. Perhaps even eliminate them completely.  What fears do you have and what can you do to banish them?

Julia talks about the ‘creative u-turns’ that we encounter.  One quote she has says that ‘we get more sympathy as crippled artists than as functional ones’. Ouch! No wonder there are so many wounded, damaged, disgruntled, pained…..artists out there. Perhaps we respond to the sympathy and attention, or the labels that are given us, and create our reality based on those responses rather than on what our creative purpose might really be. We are also easily distracted along the way – that shiny object syndrome (Yep, I  have this!). And we create excuses for being diverted from our true path. What we label as reasons, but are really just excuses. How many creative u-turns have you experienced? How many times have you stopped yourself on your path? What can you do to remedy that? How can you gently turn yourself around and get back on your path?

We talked about resentments and fears and blocks and what we could do about them. We talked about our stories that we tell ourselves that aren’t really true. We just think they are.  In order to combat these issues, you first have to admit to them, and then you need to take action. We talked about recurring themes in our Morning Pages. Those are things we need to focus on and understand more, so that we can move forward. We all had those recurring themes that we seemed to need to write about over and over again. The next step is to recognize those themes and start working on understanding the why. That is the hard part. I know my issues. I know my recurring themes. I don’t know the why yet. But I am continuing to do the work to help me figure that out. I probably won’t be able to address those themes until I do know the Why. That is part of the work and I am confident that I will get to the heart of it. I know you will too if you keep digging deeper.

We are moving along our path. We are struggling at times. We are finding out things about ourselves that we maybe didn’t understand before. We are embracing the synchronicity that comes our way. We are enjoying our Artist Dates and working through our Morning Pages.

We meet again on Aug 16th, moving on to Chapter 10 – Recovering a Sense of Self-Protection.

This week we explore the perils that can ambush us on our creative path. Because creativity is a spiritual issue, many of the perils are spiritual perils. In the essays, tasks, and exercises of this week, we search out the toxic patterns we cling to that block our creative flow.

See you next week. I would love to hear your thoughts on this chapter. What breakthroughs are you experiencing? What are you learning about your creative journey?

We all have fears of all kinds, and we should fight and try to eliminate them. I think knowing that we are not alone on that path is helpful, and what you do with your friends at your book club is great.

Definitely having somebody to share your fears and concerns with helps a lot. Facing your fears is tough work! But we are not alone and that is the important thing to remember.
