Tangling Again!

6 Mar

The first Zentangle® video was so fun that I did another one. I’m liking how they turn out and it gives me an opportunity to practice more often. Plus it lets me share my love of tangling in the hope that you will want to explore Zentangle too. You can visit zentangle.com for more information on the process, or take a class with a CZT (me :) ). Enjoy the video.

As a CZT (Certified Zentangle Teacher) you can take classes with me, or purchase official Zentangle products and books. I offer beginner level classes on a fairly regular basis, as well as the occasional more advanced class. I am also available for private classes, classes in your home or office, or you can schedule a class at Blue Twig Studio for a group of friends (which is always a great time!). Leave me a message if you are interested in any of these options.

I love the Zentangle process and enjoy the results I get. I know you will too!

Blue Box Art Party in a Box

15 Jan

My friend Cass recently hosted a Blue Box art party in a box at her home. She was gracious enough to invite me to be there along with her other guests. So I took photos and gathered input from the other participants. Of course I knew how to create the art piece and hoped that the instructions were easy to understand for both creative types and non-creative types of guests. Watching the party in action was a great opportunity for me. Thanks Cass!

First of all, there was a great mix of guests there, as well as an awesome selection of chocolate and wine and other beverages. It was already a good party before we even get started on the art!

But we did eventually get started being creative. We did the step-outs that were included in the directions and each of us used the paints in different ways, making our pieces uniquely ours from the get-go.

Then we got busy with adding the stencils and paint to create our Branches artwork.

In between steps there was a lot of laughter and a bit of dancing and, of course, trips to the kitchen to get more chocolate and wine (to keep up our strength and energy only :) ).

Then on to another layer of paint and then adding our personal quotes or words and other details to make each piece unique and personal. And we all signed and dated our artwork too (as all great artists do!). Aren’t these pieces fabulous?

All in all, it was a fun party and everyone went home with their completed art piece. As the hostess Cass was able to keep all the leftover products as well as enjoy her hostess gift (there is a surprise hostess gift in every box). Everyone seemed to have a lot of fun and the party was a huge success. Here are a couple of quotes from two of the guests.

This is a wonderful activity for all artistic levels. As a non artist, I walked away with self-created art, good enough to hang on the wall!  ~Robin

Had a blast – would like to do a few more!  ~Meg G

The Blue Box art parties are designed to be completed in 2-3 hrs time, and are suitable for both beginner and more advanced level participants. Everything you need to host the party in your own home is included (except for paper towels and a hair dryer to speed up drying times). OK – you also have to provide your own refreshments. :)

What a fun idea for a birthday party or bridal shower or family get-together. It is a unique activity and loads of fun! Plus you end up with art work – how cool is that? If you are interested in hosting your own Blue Box party, you can find the options here on the Blue Twig Studio website. There are currently 2 different art projects available, in both a 5-person box and a 10-person box. More art projects are on the way in the near future.

Holiday ATCs

10 Nov

I decided I should be sharing whenever I am creating stuff. I don’t always remember to take photos is usually why I don’t always share. I really have to work on taking photos. Anyone want to nag me on a regular basis? :)

I belong to an ATC group, where we meet once a month and trade our ATCs. One month we have a theme, and then the next month we don’t. We’ve been meeting for several years now, and the makeup of the group is always changing. People come and go, like with all groups. But we have a lot of fun and it is always inspiring to see what everyone creates. We have fabric ATCs, paper ATCs, metal ATCs, and all sorts of interesting parts to create mixed media art. ATCs are perfect for practicing new techniques and trying out new mediums.

This month our theme was “song themes”. It took me a while to figure out what to do for that. I finally settled on doing a holiday song theme. It seemed kind of natural for this time of year.

I know a lot of people use green & red for Christmas, but I like blue & silver. I started with a light blue cardstock. Then I used some vintage Christmas music pages (which are part of these paper packs) and tore them into pieces (setting the song titles aside) and used fluid matte medium to adhere them to the cardstock. Once I covered the page, I spritzed with a couple of the glimmer mist sprays (I used Frost & Silver).  They are very light in color, but add a bit of shimmer to the page.

I then cut the page into my ATC sized pieces (2.5″ x 3.5″). Once I had them cut, I added some snowflake trim, again using the matte medium to adhere it. I gathered up the song titles and tore them out, inking the edges with an ink pad. I also inked the edges of the ATC at the same time. I like how that just adds a bit more finish to the edges. When the ink was dry, I glued the song titles onto each ATC  (with the matte medium). And then signed and dated the backside using a silver pen. They were easy to create and I think they turned out pretty cute. Here is a pic of the whole group, and then a closeup of one of them.

Do you belong to an ATC group? If not, maybe you should create your own group. It is a lot of fun to make these little bits of art. :)

You can also see the Blog ATC Challenge and send in a Bird ATC for Nov. I’ve already received a few really great ATCs for the Blog Challenge. I hope you decide to join us.

Do you want to win?

5 Nov

I just happen to have an extra copy of the current issue (Nov Dec 2012) of ‘cloth paper scissors’ to give away to one lucky blog follower. I happen to love this magazine, as well as the sister magazine of ‘quilting arts’.  Both of these publications offer a great variety of mixed media projects and ideas, as well as great articles about different aspects of your creative world. If you are not already a subscriber, this is your chance to get an issue and check it out.

What do you have to do to win? You have to leave a comment here on the blog about what new art/creative technique you most want to learn about. It can be anything at all that you are interested in trying. I’d really like to know.

So, leave your comment and I’ll pick one lucky winner to get the magazine. I’ll pick a winner the end of the week. Good luck and leave a comment below. :)

Making Monsters

24 Oct

I took a class at Art & Soul in Portland called Monster Lab, by Andrew Dyrdahl. There were only 2 of us in the class, so we got great undivided attention and instruction. The class was fun and very creative. I ended up finishing one doll in class and starting a second one (for my sister who couldn’t attend :( ) They turned out super cute (I know they are monsters and supposed to be scary, but they are not!) and now I am in love with them.

This is the first doll I made for me. Her name is Miss Trixie Darling. The photo isn’t very good I’m afraid, but hopefully you get the idea of her.

Miss Trixie Darling by Deb Prewitt

Here is the Misfit doll I made for my sister Teresa. She turned out super cute and I can’t wait to find out what my sister decides to name her.

Misfit doll I made for my sister

Yesterday I started creating some more little monster dolls. It is a great way to use up scraps and mismatched buttons and bits of trim, etc. They are kind of addictive. I started putting some dolls together and planning them and got so excited about all the ideas in my head for these funky misfit dolls. I just wanted to keep going. How many can I make?

Then comes the fun part of naming them. They each have their own personality and deserve their own little misfit names. I will post more photos as I finish these little misfit cuties up. Hmmm….what do you think about the name Misfit Cuties for these dolls?

Zentangle Classes

30 Jul

I had every intention of doing a blog post about the Zentangle® classes as I taught them. Each class would have its own special blog post. *sigh* Obviously that did not happen. But, no worries, I will catch you up  to date with all the fun tiles made by my students. I have tried to keep my classes small and intimate as I feel more connected to the students that way. I am not opposed to doing larger classes, but I feel more comfortable with the smaller venues, and I think the students feel that they have more of my attention that way as well.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Hope you enjoy the show. Clearly I need some better photography skills :) , but I hope you can see how wonderful all the student work is. It is always so inspiring to me to see how the students interpret the same directions and make the work their own. Because Zentangle is not about replicating a particular tangle, but about the mindfulness of the process and creating your own work. There are no mistakes in Zentangle.

You can find out more about Zentangle at www.zentangle.com. You can purchase official Zentangle products here.

If you are interested in having me teach Zentangle to you, please contact me and let me know. Upcoming Zentangle classes taught in my studio are listed on the classes tab at the top of the page. I am always willing to come to you if that works better, or to create a one-on-one class to suit your schedule and needs.

Absolute Best Conference Ever!

16 Jul

e-women check in booth

I was at the e-women networking conference in Dallas TX this week and it was so incredibly amazing. This was my first e-women conference so I was unsure of exactly what to expect. Of course I had talked to a friend who had been there before (she was the one who convinced me I should go) and she told me I would love it. But you know how it is, sometimes you have to go through the experience yourself.

e-women conference

I went with a couple of friends and that made the experience so much better. It was so nice to share the experience as it was happening and brainstorm new ideas (the ideas were running rampant). The entire event was top-notch and first-class and was wonderful. Sandra and Kym Yancey are the hosts of the event and were wonderful and gracious and generous and worked so hard to make the event the Best Conference Ever! I can’t emphasize enough how amazing the experience was for me.

Liz, Ruth, Deb, Terza

The speakers were all the best in their respective fields. The facilities were wonderful. The staff was on top of their game. The whole spirit of the conference was inspiring, and I came home brimming with new ideas. The women (and men) that attended this conference were amazing. I was quite impressed by the air of confidence, clarity, committment, and generosity of spirit that these women exuded. Not to mention beautiful clothes, fabulous shoes, stunning hair and gorgeous jewelry. Especially the shoes. There were some pretty amazing shoes at this conference! (I really wish I could wear some of those shoes!)

Lisa Nichols was fabulous

Now I am on a new mission with my work. I learned so much at this conference and now I have a lot of work to do. But good work! I have new ideas for the business and the blog. I have a new direction I want to go in and now I need to lay out the game plan and get to work! So exciting and a little bit scary too, but mostly exciting! I’ll keep you posted.

making new friends

It was amazing and wonderful and inspirational! I will definitely be there again next year!  (did I gush enough? :) )

Book Club – The Artist’s Way – Chapter 3

22 Jun

Our book club discussion group met last night (The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron). It has been 3 weeks since our last meeting (due to scheduling difficulties) so it was interesting to see how everyone handled the extra time for the chapter. I found that having extra time didn’t mean I did extra work, but rather I just delayed getting started. Which is probably typical for a lot of people. There is a tendency to think that if we have extra time it will help us with the task at hand, but in reality we probably just delay starting the task instead of utilizing the extra time! At least that is how I tend to respond.

Everyone was doing the Morning Pages (at least some of the time), some more regularly than others, but it seemed to be getting easier to do them for most of us. I admit, I only did them one day while I was traveling, but I am quite diligent when I am at home.  The Artist Dates are still hard for some of us to be able to do alone! All of us were able to do artistic/creative/inspiring activities, but not all of us managed to do them alone! But we all agreed that even if you are with somebody else, it was still good to participate in anything that gave us that creative spark!  The Artist Dates ranged from going to the Fine Arts Center to gardening to going to art galleries to taking art classes. Lots of great ideas!

Chapter 3 was Recovering a Sense of Power and dealt with issues like anger, shame, criticism, and synchronicity. The idea that anger is a positive emotion, in that it shows us what we need to change and the direction we need to go, was quite provocative. Most of us probably think of anger as a bad thing, but the book explains how to use it as a map of where we want to go. Somehow that makes me feel better. The issues of shame and criticism and how they are often linked brought up concerns about the fine line between good criticism and bad criticism. While most of the time it is pretty easy to tell which is which, it is those criticisms that straddle that line that are confusing for me. We discussed shame and the value that art has when dealing with the secrets of society. That art reveals things about a culture/society that are often uncomfortable.

We all loved the idea of synchronicity. The universe will provide that answer if you only ask. We have all experienced a time when we decided we needed something, and simply put our intention out there, and voila! the answer appeared almost immediately. It doesn’t always have to be something big or profound (I need a career change), it can be something simple and easy (I need a black dress).  Go ahead and try it and see what happens. (My hubby & I had discussed the need to hire a very part-time employee, but working out of the house and having dogs causes difficulties for having employees. We talked about what we needed and how to find it, and next thing we know somebody we know mentioned they were looking for part-time work and since it is somebody we know and like, it is perfect!)  Intent is a very powerful thing!

Our group always has interesting discussions (and usually lots of laughter) that come from the chapter we are reading, or from something we have experienced and decided to share with the group. We talked a bit about stereotypes and how that affects us and whether there is validity in them. We also discussed the idea of ‘too many choices’ and how that can be a good thing but also a bad thing. I can say that I find too many choices to be problematic. Deciding things both big and small requires so much work these days due to the amount of choices out there, as well as the availability of information, that we can agonize over even the most basic of decisions. I certainly am old enough to remember a time when there were much fewer choices, and we all survived!

One of the quotes in the book is from Erica Jong, “Take your life in your own hands and what happens? A terrible thing: no one to blame.” We discussed the issues between blame and responsibility and how they were vital to this study. Taking responsibility for our own actions and ideas and thoughts and behaviours gives us back our own personal power. While it might be scary, it is also quite liberating. Embrace your own personal power!!!!

We discussed Fear as part of the changes we are experiencing. Fear of failure of course, but more often it is fear of success that scares us and freezes us in our tracks. Yikes! What happens when what we are thinking of doing actually works? What then? Will there be even more changes? (Change is good and inevitable!) Then there is the fear that the changes will affect our relationships too. What will our friends and family say? What will they think? Fear can lock you into a place where you aren’t really happy or satisfied. Be careful you don’t let it take control.

Each group member is taking those small steps needed to find our creative selves and we are enjoying the ride! What are you doing to find your path to higher creativity?

We are ready for the next chapter now. Chapter 4 is about Recovering a Sense of Integrity.

This week may find you grappling with changing self-definition. The essays, tasks, and exercises are designed to catapult you into productive introspection and integration of new self-awareness.  This may be both very difficult and extremely exciting for you. Warning: Do not skip the tool of reading deprivation!

Yikes! Reading deprivation! Oh no! I am not sure I am going to like this next chapter! Our next meeting will be June 28th! See you then.

Fabulous Classes with Carol Sloan

4 Jun

Blue Twig Studio hosted the lovely Carol Sloan this week. She was here teaching two classes for us – Whimsical Markmaking and Painted Pages. Carol is a lot of fun as a teacher, and has created a lot of artwork so she really knows her stuff! You can read about her art journey on her blog. She is also part of the Sketchbook Challenge group, so you can see a lot of her work if you follow the challenge blog. She will be teaching at Art Camp for Women this next week.

We had two days of fun experimenting and playing with paint and paper and making marks and creating layers and all kinds of good stuff! There is something so freeing and exhilarating about just going with the flow and using a variety of products and tools and just seeing what happens. Everyone created some fun drawings and painted pages and there was much laughter and giggling and of course chocolate!

Here are some pictures to show you what kind of stuff we were creating and maybe you can see how much fun we were having too.

Oooh, looks like fun!

Yummy colors!

Stack of pages in progress.

Pages laid out to dry.

More pages drying.

We all now have a stack of pages that will be perfect for art journaling or collage or mixed media projects. We had a lot of fun and I am already planning the next trip for Carol to teach at Blue Twig Studio. We all had a good time and had a couple of days just letting go and having FUN! Maybe you can join us next time around.
